NDI South Africa is proud to present Gidon Levenbach, L.Ac. and the Flying Needle Project (FNP). FNP believes that health care is a right, not a privilege. Its focus is the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa. In 2009, FNP will open a clinic in Cape Town, South Africa. The clinic will provide, free and low cost alternative healthcare (acupuncture and adjunctive therapies) to the HIV/AIDS infected population of the area. After the initial clinic is established, FNP will develop a mobile clinic. The mobile clinic will service townships and more removed locations. FNP will provide treatment for the symptoms of HIV/AIDS (immune suppression, gastrointestinal issues, insomnia, fatigue etc.) as well as the side effects of the antiretroviral medications (peripheral neuropathy, headaches, gastrointestinal issues, skin conditions etc.)
FNP director, Gidon Levenbach L.Ac, has volunteered and observed at clinics such as Quan Yin Healing Arts Center (San Francisco, CA), Project Quest (Portland, OR), and the Immune Enhancement Project (Portland, OR) since 1995. These experiences clearly demonstrated the effect that Chinese medicine can have on HIV/AIDS patients. Gidon saw improvements in quality of life, pain management, immunity and general wellbeing in patients. The FNP appreciates models set forth by these clinics and believes that accessible alternative health care is essential in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. Once established, FNP will invite acupuncturists from South Africa, the United States and the rest the world to offer service and participate in the clinics. FNP believes that acupuncture is an efficient, affordable, mobile, and effective health care modality. Its goal is to spread the availability of this modality in the form of clinics and mobile units throughout southern Africa.
